SAM.gov Registration and Navigation: The Complete Guide for Colorado Contractors
If you want to bid on federal work or get paid on a federal contract, you need an active SAM.gov registration. This guide pulls together everything we have written about registering, keeping your record current, and finding opportunities on SAM.gov.
1. Registering your entity
Registration is free. You will need your legal business name and physical address exactly as they appear with the IRS, your EIN/TIN, banking details for electronic payment, and your NAICS codes. SAM.gov assigns your Unique Entity ID (UEI) and, through DLA, your CAGE code. Never pay a third party that claims registration has a fee.
2. Keeping your registration active
Registrations must be renewed every 365 days. Put a reminder on your calendar at least 60 days before expiration, since a lapsed record can delay awards and payments. Update your record any time your address, banking, ownership or points of contact change.
3. Finding opportunities
Use Contract Opportunities search with filters for NAICS code, set-aside type (for example SDVOSB or Small Business), place of performance (Colorado, Wyoming) and notice type. Save your searches and turn on email alerts so new solicitations come to you.
4. Common mistakes we see
Mismatched names or addresses between SAM and the IRS, missing or outdated NAICS codes, an incomplete Reps & Certs section, and an expired registration discovered the week a bid is due.
