Service-disabled veteran-owned small business (SDVOSB) status opens doors to federal set-aside and sole-source contracts. SDVOSB certification is handled by the SBA through the Veteran Small Business Certification program (VetCert). This guide consolidates our earlier SDVOSB articles into one up-to-date walkthrough.

Who is eligible

The firm must be a small business under the size standard for its primary NAICS code, and one or more service-disabled veterans must own at least 51% and control day-to-day management and long-term decisions.

Steps to certify

1) Make sure your SAM.gov registration is active. 2) Gather your documents: VA disability rating letter, DD-214, ownership and governing documents, tax returns, and resumes of key personnel. 3) Apply at veterans.certify.sba.gov. 4) Respond quickly to any SBA requests for more information. 5) Once approved, keep your certification current and report changes in ownership or control.

How SDVOSB status helps contractors win work

Agencies have a government-wide goal for SDVOSB spending, and many solicitations are set aside for certified SDVOSBs. Primes also look for SDVOSB subcontractors to meet their subcontracting plans, which makes certification valuable even for firms that mainly work as subs.
